Devotionals: Being Available

Are you available for others at your office? Professional sports teams, Universities, the Armed Forces, and numerous other organizations have chaplains, so why don’t businesses have chaplains? Well, technically, they do; it’s you and me.

Pastors reach the masses every Sunday, but who reaches the lost or hurting in our offices?  In reality, we have the unique and privileged opportunity to bring the hope of Jesus Christ to our workplace Monday through Friday. God calls us to be ministers in our workplace. Are you ready?

What’s stopping us from being used by God to further His Kingdom at our offices? We may think we’re unqualified, or perhaps we‘re intimidated by confrontation, but God knows exactly where we are and wants us to help. Are you available?

Here are some ways we can be available to others in our offices:

  • During our daily conversations, ask leading questions and reply with intent to spark a ‘God Conversation’: Q – What did you do this weekend? A – my small group went down to Mexico to build a house for a family in need.
  • If a colleague tells you something they are struggling with, tell them you will pray for them, or even pray for them right then and there. People rarely say no to prayer, no matter their belief systems
  • Practice being the ‘Encourager’ of your office. Just as Barnabas was an encourager to Paul and many others in the Book of Acts, make it a point to lift people up with kind words and affirming conversations; it’s amazing how far a compliment and smile will go.

During the hustle and bustle of work, I encourage you, as I often have to encourage myself, to take a moment, look around your office, and be the one that reaches out to your coworkers. I challenge you to become the ‘chaplains’ in your own offices, so that you can be available to those around you and a light to your secular workplace.

” Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.”

– 1 Peter 3:8
